What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's disease is characterized by a loss of movement and coordination due to a progressive brain disorder affecting the nervous system. Researchers are not exactly sure what causes the disease but know that it has something to do with brain signals being disrupted.

At this time, there is no known cure for Parkinson's disease. Some treatments have shown promise, however, in slowing the progression of the disease or easing the symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease

People with Parkinson's disease may suffer from tremors or shaking. These tremors generally affect the hands, arms, legs, or head. They may notice their muscles feel stiff or involuntarily contract.

As Parkinson's disease progresses, a person may notice their ability to move is slowing down. They may become uncoordinated and lose their ability to balance themselves. Symptoms progress over time, eventually making it difficult to talk or walk.

How Upper Cervical Care Helps Parkinson's Disease Patients

The uppermost seven vertebrae are known as the upper cervical spine. This part of the spine begins at the base of the skull and runs through the neck. The brain and spinal cord together make up the Central Nervous System (CNS).

When the upper cervical spine is misaligned, it can cause compression or pinching of nerves and disrupt brain signals between the brain and the rest of the body. When the vertebrae are realigned, it helps reduce swelling and inflammation and relieves any pressure on nerves. Once nerve signals can flow unimpeded, the body's natural healing processes can resume and begin restoring health and wellness.

Unfortunately, the neck is a very vulnerable area. Most people will suffer from misalignments in the upper cervical spine because it doesn't take a major jolt to the head or neck area to cause misalignments. Symptoms of Parkinson's may be exacerbated or accelerated when this happens, and patients may find relief once a healthy alignment is restored.
