What are Ear Problems?

Any problems affecting the ear or inner ear are generally referred to as "ear problems." This may include conditions such as earaches, infections, tinnitus, or hearing loss.

The ear is a very delicate area with many complex parts, and it can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Modern medical research has revealed that many chronic ear problems may actually begin in the neck—more specifically, in the upper cervical spine.

Signs and Symptoms of Ear Problems

There is a wide range of symptoms that people with ear problems may experience. Some of the more common symptoms include aching or stabbing pains, a feeling of fullness in the ear, or a feeling as though the ear is clogged.  Some people may experience a ringing in the ear (either sporadic or long-term), or some level of hearing loss.

Often people with ear problems may also experience balance problems such as dizziness or vertigo. Ear problems can also cause headaches or nausea.

How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects the Ear

Eustachian tubes are small tubes that run from the middle ear to the back of the throat. These tubes are responsible for equalizing air pressure and draining fluids from the ear. They are very close to the upper cervical spine, which is the uppermost vertebrae found in the neck just below the brain stem.

When the vertebrae in the upper cervical spine are misaligned, it may cause inflammation around the neck and base of the skull. This may put pressure on or compress the eustachian tubes, causing tension and pressure to build up in the inner ear. When that happens, it can result in a variety of different ear problems.

How Our Ear Treatment Works

To alleviate symptoms of ear problems, our doctor gets to the root of the problem by treating the upper cervical spine. Once the vertebrae are realigned and in their proper position, it decreases inflammation and the body can begin healing. This enables the eustachian tubes to resume their normal function.

Dr. Bejian Shamloo is an upper cervical specialist here at Upper Spine Knoxville. The doctor corrects the vertebrae without any pulling or twisting. Instead, Dr. Shamloo utilizes advanced 3D imaging and infrared thermography to calculate the angles and locations of any misalignments. These advanced diagnostic tools help eliminate the guesswork, allowing the doctor to make precise corrections.

Ear problems can get worse over time, and if untreated can put you at risk for more serious health problems.
